Quidding Salvia
I often saw pigs, sometimes wearing tuxedos, and bacon, portrayed in a cartoonish way. These visions reminded me of the cartoon sections of Pink Floyds “The Wall”. I rehydrate my dried leaves in a cup of water for 5-10 minutes, wring the water out of it gently and tap it dry with a paper towel. If your trip-ee is laying on a bed or something, sit on a chair that does not directly face them.
If you can make it to 10 minutes of chewing without spitting or swallowing, that’s great. I understand it’s uncomfortable, but it’s worth it to push past that in my opinion. 15 minutes of quidding is a great goal to aim for in my opinion. In my earlier days, I would set a timer for 15 minutes and then spit out. Now I just keep quidding until I feel the effects enough. If you’re like me, you’ll start talking to imaginary characters, visualizing your mouth or some other imagery things, etc.
Keep a bowl or something nearby to spit out the leaves once you’ve started feeling the how to quid salvia effects strongly or until you’ve reached 15-20minutes. When most people think of ingesting salvia, they instantly think of smoking extracts of the leaf. This has become the standard way of using the plant in western culture. The Mazatec, however, traditionally ingested the leaf orally or buccally. By chewing a large bundle of fresh Salvia leaves, commonly reffered to as a “quid”, one absorbs the active ingredients of the leaf through mucosal membranes in the mouth, throat, and gums.
Maybe bite down on the leaves 2 times every 10 seconds if you need a guide. Keep the leaves pressed against the outside of your gums or under your tongue. Just don’t let them sit in your mouth without contact. They will get stuck in your teeth, push through that discomfort. It will not taste great, push through that discomfort. There will be an uncomfortable buildup of salvia, try not to swallow or spit out.
Comprehensive quidding guide with Q&A. The best way to experience Salvia in my opinion.
The visions began as faint patterns against black. An S-shaped twisty thing formed in the center of my vision. My thoughts became off-baseline and muddled, and I began to converse mentally with all the faint “entities” forming in front of my eyes. I was wondering why I had all of a sudden formed chants in my head, and why random three note songs, almost like carnival music, played in my mind.

I saw visions of beings with no definite shape, but in my mind, at the time, it was clear what they were. A river populated with cartoon like beings, elf-like, almost. Then the green and blue dots that made up the shapes of the entities, which I thought were cells, or atoms, grew in detail.

The tunnel formed again later , and then I realized that the entities were the cells of the salvia plant and that I was travelling down its stem. You’re not here to party or send snaps of you tripping balls. Have never done this before or anything like this, but I want to nail it as best I can the first time. Many salvia guides explain that a proper way to orally absorb plain leaf is through first soaking and then rolling the plain leaves into a cylinder called a quid.

Keep swishing those leaves around your gums and biting on them. Quidding is the traditional method amongst the Mazatecs in Oaxaca. Smoking the leaf was seen in a negative light. In my experience, quidding is such a beneficial, subtle, and transformative experience that I will not smoke the leaf or extracts. So I have 2 ounces of plain leaf from the big D, and all the plain leaf is ground up.
I always hear people say take like “3-5 leafs” or whatever. But how can I measure it in whole leafs if it’s ground up? What I’m really asking is how much in grams am I supposed to take for a first time?
I prepared a quid of dried leaves, soaking them in water for about five minutes to soften them. I chewed the leaves slowly, letting the juice from them run to the back of my mouth and the pulp lay under my tongue. I heard a sound- white noise- somewhat like the sound of an ocean. My eyes were covered with a sleeping mask and my ears deafened with plugs. By quidding salvia leaves, you should have a mindset akin to being ready to meditate or dream.
These accidents where people jump out windows on salvia only occur because the drug was smoked in a too potent manner. Whereas with quidding, the effect is subtle enough that I could check off a whole grocery list in Walmart while tripping. The imagination and experience of quidding depends on you meditating and meeting the salvia where it is at, if you don’t do your part, it won’t give you its full effect.
Fresh leaves result in more tannins that dry out the mouth and have a stronger bitter taste. However, fresh leaves by a plant is a beautifully unique experience in my opinion. Quidding is the act of absorbing Salvinorin from the mucous membranes in the mouth, usually attained by chewing salvia leaves. I had seen her silhouette formed by vines during my first trip, and she had also appeared several times for short periods of time during this trip.
If the trip is too strong for you, focus on your breath and do meditation. Know that it will all be over within an hour. Most likely though, your trip will be so subtle that you won’t be overwhelmed.
